A desuperheater is a combination device of pressure piping components that reduces the pressure and temperature of steam to a specified value. The high-pressure steam is regulated by throttling through a reduced-pressure steam control valve to reduce the steam pressure to that required for production.

The general purpose of the device is to provide efficient and continuous heat transfer between gas and water. The application and design of the high efficiency desuperheater ensures that costly problems are avoided, including general wear and tear on downstream piping and equipment, longer start-up and shutdown times, and reduced process efficiency.

The principle is to spray liquid water in superheated steam. This results in an evaporative cooling effect, as most of the liquid droplets will evaporate. The evaporation of water requires heat from its surroundings, i.e. superheated steam. This causes the steam temperature to decrease because of the presence of steam at the outlet of the steam desuperheater equipment. Often, due to continuous operation, water may accumulate on the walls of the equipment. This accumulated water is removed with a hot water spray. The temperature of the hot water spray is maintained near the saturation temperature of the steam exiting the equipment.
